The Road to Forever WarPresident Jimmy Carter carried on the tradition of "moral diplomacy" to respond to the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. His boycott of the Summer Olympics and grain embargo were controversial, but his commitment to protecting the free flow of oil from the Persian Gulf (his "Carter Doctrine") would have far more lasting effects on US foreign policy--the concept of "forever war."
